A Northern Light

What a gorgeous book! I couldn't put it down! I highly recommend "A Northern Light" by Jennifer Donnelly. It's the wonderful, raw story of a young girl growing up poor in northern New York State in the early 1900's. She dreams of college, but resigns herself to marrying young and working hard . . . but will she give up on her dreams? Lovely, lovely book.

Jessica recommends. . . .

The Brothers Grimm was great, classic Gilliam. And Transporter 2 was actually better than Transporter 1, plotwise, and not as good car-chase-wise.

In the book world: Philippa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl, and Herbie Brennan's Faerie Wars. I couldn't decide which one to read first, so I'm reading them simultaneously!

Humane Society

I know it probably seems petty when there are so many human victims of Hurricane Katrina. But there are animal victims, too. If you, like me, were saddened by thoughts of what is happening to the abandoned pets in Louisiana and Mississippi, go here: https://secure.hsus.org/01/disaster_relief_fund_2005 . You can donate to the Humane Society's relief fund, to help them round up the pets in stricken areas and care for them.
